ZChat 2.12.4, the version offered here, cannot send ZEC or on-chain messages. Zcash upgraded its network on 28 July 2026 and 2.12.4 does not know the new rules. It also may not show some ZEC sent to it. A fixed version, 2.13.0, is being tested. It is not published yet. Target: by 1 November 2026. If you already use ZChat: write down your recovery phrase and do not uninstall the app. Your funds stay on the blockchain and can be spent again after you update.

No phone number and no account — your Zcash address is the identity. Every message is end-to-end encrypted, and you pick per conversation whether it rides as a memo inside a Zcash shielded transaction or travels free over NOSTR: three transport modes. Android only. No email, no account, no waitlist — download the signed APK and verify it yourself.

Platform Availability

ZChat is Android only. It is not on Google Play, the App Store, F-Droid, Samsung or the Solana dApp Store, and nothing has been submitted to any of them — store distribution is scheduled after a third-party security audit and its remediation. There is no iOS build and no iOS source, and no desktop or web client.

Verification

APK Checksum (SHA-256)

Each release publishes a per-build SHA-256 checksum alongside the APK. Compare it against your download on the GitHub release page.

Signing Key

Every APK is signed with ZChat's dedicated release key — never re-signed by a store, because we do not distribute through one. The certificate fingerprint is permanent and unchanged across every release:

F1:7A:F1:28:23:CA:20:8B:63:2E:29:81:38:B7:89:13:74:F6:65:17:C8:9D:BF:BE:12:FC:3A:C3:65:01:C8:06

Verify it yourself:

apksigner verify --print-certs -v ZChat.apk

Do not take the fingerprint from this page alone. The same value is printed in every one of our GitHub release notes and in our July 2026 Zcash forum update, so you can check it against a source we do not control. A build that prints anything else is not ours. The client is MIT licensed with no closed component, so you can also build it from source and compare — see docs/Setup.md in the Android repository.

Release Notes

v2.12.412 July 2026
  • ~ Fixed a crash on launch while the chat screen loaded
  • ~ Fixed a crash when opening Restore Wallet after scanning a wallet-backup QR
  • ~ Hardened six more fields of the same class, three of them in the Tunnel handshake path

Public source is already at 2.13.0; that release has not been cut yet. Full notes and per-release checksums are on GitHub.

ZChat is open source under the MIT License — both repositories, with no closed component.

The Android client is a fork of Zashi, the Zcash wallet published by Electric Coin Company under the MIT License; that upstream has since been renamed and now lives at zodl-inc/zodl-android.
